On September 23rd I made one year at my current job in Palo Alto. I live in Oakland, on the other side of the San Francisco Bay. Oakland is a big city, really big, it is about 7.5 miles long from North to South limits. And I live all the way to the North.

My commute is long, very long.

Shortest route is 42 miles, longest, and unfortunately usually the fastests is 53 miles long.

I usually take about 1 hour and 10 minutes to get to work in the mornings, and around 1 hour in the evenings. Occasionally I hit real bad traffic, usually because some idi… somebody has had an accident somewhere on the way, and when I say occasionally I mean every day.

In any case, I’ve just counted the number of days I’ve gone to work. All of the days of the year, minus holidays, minus one sick day, minus vacations, and it adds up to 212. Yeah, there are a lot of weekends and holidays on a year.

But,

212 days * 130 minutes each day = 27560 minutes.

or

459.3 hours

or

19.1 days

I’ve wasted 19 whole days this past year driving in traffic back and forth.
